You may need to use currency symbols in Microsoft Word documents from time to time. If you write about financial matters in European countries, you’ll likely need to reference the Euro symbol.
The article discusses 4 ways to insert the Euro symbol into a Word document.
1) Use a Keyboard Shortcut to Type the Euro Symbol
Word users love keyboard shortcuts… and Microsoft Word has a built-in keyboard shortcut for the Euro symbol!
To type the Euro symbol in any Word document, click where you’d like the Euro sign to appear, then press Ctrl + Alt + e. Don’t press Shift though… this keyboard shortcut uses a lower case “e”.
2) Add the Euro Sign with the Insert Symbol Dialog Box
You can easily insert the Euro symbol with the Symbols dialog box. Click where you want the Euro symbol to appear then do the following:
- Click the Symbol button in the Symbols group on the Insert tab.
- Select More Symbols from the drop-down menu.
The Symbols dialog appears. - Verify that the Symbols tab is selected. Select (normal text) from the Font drop-down menu and Currency Symbols from the Subset drop-down menu.
- Select the Euro symbol (€), click the Insert button, then click Close.

3) Use an Alt Code Shortcut with the Numeric Keypad
You can insert the Euro symbol by holding the Alt key while typing 0128 on your numeric keypad.
Please note: the Alt + 0128 shortcut only works if you have a full size keyboard with a numeric keypad. If you have a laptop with a compact keyboard, this shortcut likely won’t work for you.
4) Add the Euro Symbol to the AutoCorrect Dialog Box
You can use AutoCorrect to substitute the Euro sign any time a string of characters like (e) is typed.
Here is how to add an entry for the Euro symbol to AutoCorrect in Word.
- Click the Symbol button in the Symbols group on the Insert tab.
- Select More Symbols from the drop-down menu.
The Symbols dialog box appears. - Verify that the Symbols tab is selected. Select (normal text) from the Font drop-down menu and Currency Symbols from the Subset drop-down menu.
- Select the Euro sign (€) then click the AutoCorrect button.
The AutoCorrect dialog box appears. - Type (e) in the Replace box then click Add then click OK.
- Click Close.

After adding an AutoCorrect entry for the Euro sign, every time you type (e), Microsoft Word will automatically add the Euro symbol to your document.
